WHAT YOU CAN DO TO INCREASE BICYCLE SAFETY IN MISSISSIPPI

  1.     Make a commitment to "DO YOUR PART"

When bicyclists ask motorists to follow the rules of the road,

it is important that both parties are doing what is required under the law.

Start by making a commitment to:

  • Stop at Stop Signs

  • Use Turn Signals and Bright Lights (on the front & rear)

  • Ride on the Right side of the road - WITH Traffic (Not against!)

  • On Mississippi roads, be sure not ride more than two cyclists side by side (two abreast)

  • (Riding on the Natchez Trace requires single file)

  • Ride predictably and let motorists know where you are going.

  • Start a dialog with others about how they should properly pass a bicyclist on the road.

IT IS LEGAL in Mississippi to pass in a nonpassing zone, when the pass can be made safely.

Approach a bicyclist slowly, check for oncoming traffic, give them plenty of room and when it is safe to do -  Change Lanes to Pass.

  2.     HELP SPREAD THE WORD.

The only way to truly Educate people about Bicycle Safety is for each of us to TELL SOMEONE!

YOU MAY KNOW THE LAW - BUT, YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY MIGHT NOT!
